Our Breeding Program

Scottish Highlands

Highland cattle are known for their distinctive long horns and long, wavy coats, which provide excellent insulation against cold weather. Breeding purebred Highland cattle involves careful selection of animals that not only conform to the breed standards but also possess good temperament and health characteristics.

Our goal is aimed at enhancing specific traits, such as size, color, and muscling.

Within our fold we have a Purebred Highland Bull and several Purebred Highland Cows. Our Highlands are known for creating beautiful calves with the perfect temperament.

HighParks + British HighParks

HighPark cattle are a breed developed in Canada, known for their distinctive coloring, generally with a solid white coat and black / dun markings and nose. They are appreciated for their adaptability to various environments, as well as their fluffy coats and beautifully unique colors. Breeding HighPark cattle involves understanding the specific types within the breed and employing strategic practices to enhance desirable traits.

Here at Jet Black Farms, we breed both first, second, and third generation HighParks.

  • First generation HighParks are bred with our Highland Bull & our British White Park Mama. British White Parks are known for being polled cattle, making their calves 50% more likely to be polled as well.

  • Second generation HighParks are bred using both a HighPark Cow and a Highland Bull.

  • Third generation HighParks are bred using our HighPark Cow and HighPark bull.

All HighParks throw absolutely beautifully colored and perfectly fluffy calves. Our British White HighPark calves (1st gen) are often polled, while our basic White HighPark calves (2nd-3rd gen) are not.

Mini & Micro Moos

With the help of a borrowed Chondro + HighPark bull, and our own C+ Highland Mama, we occasionally throw a C+ HighPark / Highland calf into the mix. These calves are most often 2nd and 3rd generation HighParks (HP+HP or HP+H), or high percentage Highland (never 100% because of the Chondro Gene). With this positive recessive Chondro gene, these calves are considered Micro / Mini, depending on their size and build.

The Chondro gene originated in the Dexter Cattle breed and has since been bred into HighPark & Highland breeds, as the younger generations prefer smaller, more petite cattle, that require less space and maintenance.

Texas LongHorn / HighHorns

Here at Jet Black Farms, we have a beautiful brown & white Texas Longhorn Cow. She was one of our first cows on the farm and towers over our Highlands.

By breeding our Longhorn & Highland, we’re able to create shaggy medium-longhair moos, with longer horns, and a wider, more unique color pattern. These HighHorns are typically taller and more slim, in comparison to the standard Highland.
